Then Babe Ruth hit three home runs in what turned out to be his final week in baseball. But then, being Stan Musial, he lent the money to a buddy, and the guy didn’t pay him back in time, and Musial had to cancel at the last minute. He thought he’d have a bit left over to buy a hot dog and a souvenir of some kind. He was so excited: A 40-year-old Babe Ruth was playing for the Braves! Pittsburgh was only about 28 miles away from Musial’s hometown of Donora, and he saved up enough money for a bus ticket and a game ticket. Musial had almost attended a game in Pittsburgh three years earlier. But that day, the young sports editor of the Donora Herald, a guy named Johnny Bunardzya, offered to take Musial to his first big-league ballgame, Pirates vs. Stash, as his family and friends called him, was not the sort to skip school or do any sort of irresponsible things it just wasn’t in his nature. On May 6, 1938, Stan Musial - a 17-year-old boy with big dreams - skipped school for perhaps the only time in his life.
